Place
PLACE
This exhibition explored the notion of place - real or imaginary - which holds within it the idea of a portion of space that could be free to be occupied by someone. The word ‘place’ is vast and used in numerous expressions such as: finding one’s place, making a place for oneself, losing your place, putting in place, taking place, putting things back in their place, occupying a place, to be out of place, to take up little space, to be in the right place, to give up a place to someone.
For the exhibition PLACE, the artists explored the multiple, complex connections emerging from the idea of place, of displacement and of belonging. ‘Place’ also hints at new spaces in our social landscape, which is shaped both by large human migratory movements and by the exponential growth of virtual worlds. PLACE highlighted certain aspects of the challenge of being a francophone artist in a linguistic minority environment.
Three artists formed the central core of the exhibition (Ghislain Brown-Kossi -Vancouver, Florence Debeugny -Vancouver and Johanne Galipeau -Gabriola Island). To these three, was added at least one local French-speaking artist from the presentation sites. The PLACE exhibition was presented at:
Two Rivers Gallery in Prince George from August 6 to September 20, 2020 - with local artist Marc Patrick LaCaille Art Gallery at Evergreen Cultural Center in Coquitlam from September 1 to November 7, 2021 - with two local artists Romane Bladou and Marie-Pier Malouin. Finally, the 3rd and final stop was Gibsons Public Art Gallery in Gibsons from February 10 to March 6, 2022 - with local artist François Michaud.
This exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Conseil culturel et artistique de la Colombie-Britannique and le Collectif.
